Only replacement for Percorten
I personally prefer Percorten bc Zyrcotal stings going in for a lot of dogs ( not every dog but mine was one of the many and it traumatized him..he loved going to the vet and never minded his injection until he got zyrcotal by accident as the vet thought it was the generic for percorten..it isn’t. It’s its own drug, same active ingredient) I wish I could reply to all the people on these reviews but I couldn’t so writing my own in hopes it’ll help someone: If your dog is having excessive hunger, thirst and urination, it’s because the dosage is too high. It’s most likely the prednisone but too high of this will cause the same effects. Lower the dose to low dose protocol and these symptoms will go away. Not only that but they will also feel so much better.

Works great
No one wants to be here, buying this medication and looking at reviews; however, this medication works great and saved my dogs life. While pricey, it will prolong the life of my best friend (who obviously suffers from primary Addison's Disease). She suffers from excessive thirst, hunger, and urination but exercise and diet control help. My Rottie has been on this medication for 3 months and thriving!

Better than Percorten
Our vet for some reason switched from Percorten to Zycortal. I noticed a marked improvement in his energy level. When our Vet switched back to Percorten, why again, we stayed with Zycortal cause it works better for my 24 pounds of Perfect. We also switched from the pill form of Prednisone to a clear liquid form and cut the dose in half. (UC Davis Medical Hospital recommendation. We wanted a second opinion) I can't cut a small pill into exact quarters. The liquid is easy. The Doctor who is the Addisons specialist told me that if he had to pick a disease to have himself it would be Addisons because the treatment works so well. With the smallest effective dose of liquid Prednisone he said that Negrito's life would be shortened very little if any from using this powerful steroid. Yeah!

Gave my dog his life back
My dog was seemingly on his death bed. We toom him to the vet and he was diagnosed with Addisons Disease after a week of being in the doggy hospital. We started the zycortal along with prednisone. After months and months of trying different doses of zycortal and prednisone we finally got it right and he has finally made a recovery for the most part. He acts like a puppy again now and is living a happy life. He is constantly thirsty and urinates very very often but given the circumstances he is doing great. Its not cheap and theres no cure for this disease but our dog is so totally worth it!!!

DO NOT RISK IT
I bought this for my dog who has been taking Percoten and doing just fine for a year and a half since her diagnosis. A few days after her first injection of this generic we had to rush her to the vet. She has been in and out of the hospital since. It has already cost us $1000 and our vet anticipates that it will be another $1000 or so over the next two months. AND, my pup still isn't feeling 100%

Only replacement for Percorten
Some people have had bad results with zycortal but my dog responded well. By the time I got him in you could see he was having trouble with his addisons. Soon after the shot he was back to 100% full of energy and happy.

What is Zycortal Suspension?

Zycortal Suspension is an injectable medication for use as replacement therapy for mineralocorticoid deficiency in dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's disease). This medication replaces the mineralocorticoid hormones only. Zycortal Suspension is an alternative to Percorten-V and requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For:

Dogs

Benefits

  • Treats Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism) in dogs
  • Subcutaneous injectable medication

How does Zycortal Suspension work?

Zycortal Suspension works by replacing the mineralocorticoids, which are deficient in dogs with hypoadrenocorticism. Dogs with combined glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid deficiency need to most likely be treated with other medication that your veterinarian will prescribe.

Cautions:

For use in dogs only. Not for human use. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children. Consult a physician in case of accidental human exposure. Do not use Zycortal Suspension in pregnant or lactating dogs. Do not use Zycortal Suspension in dogs that have previously had a hypersensitivity reaction to desoxycorticosterone pivalate.

Brand Name:

Zycortal Suspension (Dechra)

Generic Name:

Desoxycorticosterone pivalate injectable suspension

What is the most important thing I should know about Zycortal Suspension?

Zycortal Suspension is a subcutaneous injectable medication used to treat Addison's disease in dogs as replacement therapy for mineralocorticoid deficiency. It is available by veterinary prescription only.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Zycortal Suspension to my pet?

Tell your veterinarian if your dog is pregnant or lactating. Also, inform your veterinarian if your pet has congestive heart disease, edema (swelling), severe renal disease or primary hepatic failure.

How should Zycortal Suspension be given?

Shake the vial vigorously prior to use. Use only according to your veterinarian's instructions. The usual recommended initial dosage is 2.2 mg/kg (1 mg/lb) of your dog's body weight, administered by subcutaneous injection. An interim monitoring veterinary visit is usually required for re-evaluation and to measure the serum sodium/potassium (Na+/K+) ratio approximately 10 days after the first dose. The second dose is usually given approximately 25 days after the first dose, after which your pet will likely be re-evaluated by your veterinarian to measure the serum sodium/potassium (Na+/K+) ratio and recommendations for subsequent doses and long-term management will be made.

What are the potential side effects of Zycortal Suspension?

Possible side effects of Zycortal Suspension include polyuria (excessive urination), polydipsia (excessive thirst), increased blood volume, edema, and cardiac enlargement. Excessive weight gain may indicate fluid retention secondary to sodium retention.

What happens if I miss giving a dose of Zycortal Suspension?

Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose you missed and give the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not give a double dose unless otherwise directed by your veterinarian.

What happens if I overdose my pet on Zycortal Suspension?

Signs of Zycortal Suspension overdose include increased thirst, excessive urination, changes in heart rate or rhythm or edema. Enlargement of the heart is possible in cases of long-term overdosage. If you suspect that your pet has received an overdose of Zycortal Suspension, consult your veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic immediately.

What should I avoid while giving Zycortal Suspension to my pet?

Do not use Zycortal Suspension on pets who may be pregnant or lactating. Zycortal Suspension should be injected subcutaneously (under the skin); do not inject intravenously (in the vein). Do not use in dogs with congestive heart failure, kidney disease, or edema. Do not use in dogs who are allergic or hypersensitive to Zycortal Suspension or any of its ingredients.

What other drugs will affect Zycortal Suspension?

Consult your veterinarian if your pet is currently taking any other medications, including vitamins and supplements. Interactions may occur with insulin, diuretics, digitalis, amphotericin B or potassium-depleting diuretics such as Furosemide (Lasix, Salix).

Zycortal Suspension Directions:

  • Use according to your veterinarian's instructions.
  • Zycortal Suspension should be injected subcutaneously; do not inject intravenously (in the vein).
Tip:

Use within 120 days of first puncture of the vial and puncture a maximum of 4 times.
