What is Regu-Mate?
Regu-Mate is an oral progestin indicated for the suppression of the estrus cycle (reproductive cycle) in mares (female horses). The suppression of the estrus cycle allows for a predictable occurrence of estrus following drug withdrawal. It keeps your mare's cycle regular during the transition from winter anestrus to the physiological breeding season. Regu-Mate helps manage prolonged estrus conditions and helps you schedule breeding during the physiological breeding season. Regu-Mate requires a prescription from your veterinarian.
For:
Horses (mares)
Benefits:
- Attainment of regular estrus cyclicity
- Management of prolonged estrus conditions
- Scheduled breeding during the physiological breeding season
How does Regu-Mate work?
Regu-Mate contains the active ingredient, altrenogest, which produces a progestational effect in mares.
Cautions:
For oral use in horses only. Human skin contact with Regu-Mate must be avoided as it is readily absorbed through unbroken skin. Protective gloves must be worn by all persons handling this product. Pregnant women or women who suspect they are pregnant should not handle Regu-Mate. Accidental spillage on the skin should be washed off immediately with soap and water.

What is the most important thing I should know about Regu-Mate?
Regu-Mate requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is meant to be used for the suppression of estrus in mares. Regu-Mate is a solution for oral use only and is available in a 1,000 ml bottle. The usual dose is 1 ml per 110 lbs body weight once daily for 15 consecutive days. It can be given directly by mouth or on your mare's grain ration. Results can be seen as early as 3 days after the first administration.
What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Regu-Mate to my horse?
Tell your veterinarian if your mare has any hypersensitivity to altrenogest. Tell your veterinarian if your mare is already pregnant or lactating. Let your veterinarian know if your mare is taking any other medications or supplements. Tell your veterinarian if your mare has a history of uterine inflammation because natural or synthetic gestagen therapy may exacerbate existing low-grade or "smoldering" uterine inflammation into a fulminating uterine infection in some instances.
How should Regu-Mate be given to my horse?
Regu-Mate should be given exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Give Regu-Mate by the mouth. While wearing protective gloves, remove the shipping cap and seal, replace with the included plastic dispensing cap. Remove the cover of the dispensing cap and connect a luer lock syringe (not included). Draw out the appropriate volume of Regu-Mate solution. Detach syringe and administer solution orally at the rate of 1ml per 110 lbs body weight once daily for 15 consecutive days. Administer the solution directly on the base of the tongue or on your mare's grain ration. Replace the cover on the dispensing tip to prevent leakage.
What are the potential side effects of Regu-Mate?
No side effects have been reported.
What happens if I miss giving a dose of Regu-Mate?
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume a normal dosing schedule.
What happens if I overdose my horse on Regu-Mate?
Contact your veterinarian immediately. Various synthetic progestins, including altrenogest, when administered to rats during the embryogenic stage of pregnancy at doses manyfold greater than the recommended equine dose caused fetal anomalies, specifically masculinization of the female genitalia.
What should I avoid while giving Regu-Mate to my horse?
Avoid contact with your skin when administering Regu-Mate to your horse. If you accidentally spill the solution on your skin, wash your skin with soap and water immediately.
What other drugs will affect Regu-Mate?
Regu-Mate is contraindicated for use in mares having a previous or current history of uterine inflammation. Natural or synthetic gestagen therapy may exacerbate existing low-grade or "smoldering" uterine inflammation into a fulminating uterine infection in some instances.
