What is Fluoxetine Compounded?

Fluoxetine is an antidepressant belonging to a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). Fluoxetine Compounded requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

Please Note:

For:

Dogs & Cats

Benefits:

  • Helps with obsessive compulsive behaviors such as tail chasing in dogs, or constant licking in dogs and cats, and other behavioral disorders which are otherwise common causes for veterinary visits
  • Easy to administer

How it Works:

Fluoxetine affects chemicals in the brain that can cause depression, panic, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive behaviors.

Cautions:

Avoid giving other medicines that can make your pet sleepy (cold or allergy medicine, pain medication, muscle relaxants, seizure medicine, or other medications for depression or anxiety). Do not give Reconcile if your pet is using an MAO inhibitor such as Anipryl, selegiline, Preventic Collar, or Mitaban Dip. Side effects that may occur include rash, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. If these or any other side effects occur, stop giving your pet Fluoxetine and contact your veterinarian.

What is a Compounded Medication?

A compounded medication is the creation of a particular medication to fit the unique needs of a patient, including changing the form of the medication (e.g., from a solid pill to a liquid) for a variety reasons (e.g., to make it easier to take, to avoid a non-essential ingredient, to obtain the exact dose needed, adding favorite flavors).

If you are having difficulty giving your pet prescribed medication or need to find a discontinued medication, 1-800-PetMeds offers compounding services on select medications. We can prepare the following: (1) custom strength quantities of a medication (as capsules, liquid, chewable tablets, or transdermal (absorbed through the skin); (2) dosage forms to mask bitter or unpleasant taste (such as capsules or chewable tablets that can also be flavored); (3) dosage forms to make it easier to dose your pet such as a transdermal or liquid (that can also be flavored); and (4) discontinued products such as cisapride or DES.

Stress free kitty
My cat has done so incredibly well on this medication. She gets 0.5 mLs of the 5mg/ml liquid everyday. My only complaint is that she absolutely hates the taste.

Chewables Make it EASY
My cat was prescribed this medication, I purchased the chewables and the chewables are chicken flavor. My cat eats it like a treat. He is on 2.5 mg twice a day, the total rx was 5 mg. The chewable cost more but the cost is worth it to me because my cat is not stressed, I am not stressed to try and make him take the pill, I am not cutting any pills, I am not fighting and battling everyday. This makes life easier. If your funds permit the chewables ..they are worth it. .....Eating the chewable, I don't have to mix it with his food, I can break it up is small pieces like a treat and he eats it. Now that is drama free. Results - Well I just started, it has only been one week, but my cat is calmer he is not bitting himself as "much" as before. I did notice that when I missed one day, guess what....the biting started again. So you must follow the directions of your vet....the RX was for 90 days so we well see if this one rx resolves the problem or if it will be long term.
