About this product

What is Mometamax Otic Suspension?

Mometamax Otic Suspension is a convenient once-daily, triple-combination ear treatment applied for 7 days for mild to moderate cases of otitis externa associated with susceptible strains of yeast and bacteria in dogs. It's an advanced formula that includes a combination of medications with antibacterial effects (Gentamicin Sulfate), anti-inflammatory actions (Mometasone Furoate Monohydrate), and antifungal (Clotrimazole) properties.

Suitable for:

Dogs with mild to moderate Otitis Externa

Benefits:

  • Anti-Inflammatory Action (Mometasone Furoate Monohydrate): Mometasone rapidly controls inflammation without adrenocortical suppression while reducing discomfort, redness, & swelling.
  • Antifungal Activity (Clotrimazole): Effective Against Dermal infections caused by susceptible strains of yeast (Malassezia pachydermatis)
  • Antibacterial Effects (Gentamicin): Effective against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Provides Reliable Relief: Eases discomfort and irritation for mild to moderate cases of Canine Otitis Externa.
  • Easy to Administer: Dropper bottle includes a long tip, which makes administration easier and less stressful.

How does Mometamax Otic Suspension work?

Mometamax is an FDA approved, veterinary medication used to treat ear infections in dogs. It is a combination of three active ingredients: mometasone furoate, gentamicin sulfate, and clotrimazole. Each component plays a specific role in treating ear infections: Mometasone Furoate: This is a potent corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, itching, and swelling in the ear. It helps to relieve the symptoms associated with ear infections. Gentamicin Sulfate:This is an antibiotic that targets and kills bacteria causing the infection. It is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including those commonly responsible for ear infections in dogs. Clotrimazole: This is an antifungal agent that treats and prevents fungal infections in the ear. It is especially useful in treating infections caused by yeast, which are common in dogs' ears.

Cautions:

For Otic Use in Dogs Only. Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. Do not use Mometamax Otic Suspension in pregnant dogs. The use of these components has been associated with deafness or partial hearing loss in a small number of sensitive dogs (e.g., geriatric), although it is usually temporary. If hearing or vestibular dysfunction is noted, discontinue use immediately and flush the ear canal thoroughly with a non-ototoxic solution. If hypersensitivity to any of the components occurs, treatment should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted. Concomitant use of drugs known to induce ototoxicity should be avoided. Do not use in dogs with known tympanic perforation. Administration of recommended doses beyond 7 days may result in delayed wound healing. Avoid ingestion. For complete safety information, refer to the product label.

Mometamax Otic Suspension is a prescription medication FDA approved for use in dogs only. It is available in 7.5 gm, 15 gm, 30 gm plastic dropper bottles. Use this medication for the full amount of time prescribed by your veterinarian, even if your pet appears to be better. Symptoms may improve before the infection is completely healed.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Mometamax Otic Suspension to my pet?

Tell your veterinarian if your dog is pregnant, allergic to any of the ingredients in Mometamax Otic Suspension, has perforated eardrums, or is currently taking any other medications, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.

How should Mometamax Otic Suspension be applied?

Before instilling any medication into the ear, examine the external ear canal thoroughly to be certain the tympanic membrane is not ruptured in order to avoid the possibility of transmitting infection to the middle ear as well as damaging the cochlea or vestibular apparatus from prolonged contact. Shake well before use. The external ear canal should be thoroughly cleaned and dried before treatment. Verify that the eardrum is intact. For dogs weighing less than 30 lbs, instill 4 drops from the 7.5 g, 15 g, and 30 g bottles (2 drops from the 215 g bottle) of Mometamax once daily into the ear canal. • Gentamicin: Prolonged topical use, especially on large wounds or damaged skin, can lead to vestibular, cochlear, and renal toxicity, particularly in cases of renal insufficiency.
  • Mometasone: Possible effects include enzyme elevations (ALP and ALT), weight loss, anorexia, increased thirst and urination, neutrophilia, lymphopenia, and Cushing's syndrome with prolonged steroid use.
  • Clotrimazole: Occasional side effects include skin irritation, such as erythema, stinging, blistering, peeling, edema, pruritus, and general irritation.
  • Mometamax Otic Suspension: Less than 1% of dogs in field studies showed ataxia, proprioceptive deficits, increased water consumption, inflammation of the pinna, and diarrhea.
  • Consult your veterinarian for any unusual or bothersome side effects.

Made my dog deaf within 48 hours.
Our 11 year old dog has struggled with ear infections his whole life. This time our new vet prescribed this drug for the first time. He was totally deaf within 2 days. A year later he has probably 5% of his hearing. Every day before we used this drug our dog could hear a crumb of food hit the floor from another room and hear the mailman coming from 20 yards away. Now he doesn’t even hear us when we come home and are calling him from ten feet away. There are tons of cases like this if you do your research. Stay away.

Healthy dog went completely deaf within 4 days
Our Cavapoo's ears looked good to vet at physical and she was having no issues at all. But their annual swab of ears showed ear infections in both ears. We put 4 drops/day Mometamax drops in her ears for 4 days before noticing she had gone completely deaf. She was incredibly responsive to verbal communication, understood so much. It's heartbreaking seeing her respond to nothing.

Older dog lost partial hearing
Didn’t purchase from this site (I got mine from our vet) but I feel the need to write reviews on as many websites as I can to spread awareness: this med can indeed cause hearing loss / deafness. My sweet girl is a bit older- I’m not sure of her exact age bc she’s a rescue, but I’d say she’s maybe around 10 yrs old now? She is my whole world- so gentle and sweet and friendly. Our vet prescribed this med for her due to a yeast & bacterial infection in her left ear. She gets these ear infections basically every year around springtime, and she’s been prescribed this med before (but it was several years ago, when she was younger) and as far as I remember, it was effective enough. This time around though, it is a completely different situation. I’ve been applying this med after flushing/cleaning her left ear (per vet instructions) for the last 6-7 days or so. During that time she has definitely lost some of her hearing. It’s made me anxious, but I have been chocking it up to her possible age, or maybe the ear infection itself. However, the actual infection seems to have gotten better- still some redness but no more itching, no funky odor, no debris at all when I clean (and I make sure to not apply TOO much pressure when cleaning ear out to ensure I’m not pushing wax further in the canal.) The hearing loss literally started within a day or two of starting this med. It’s insane. She can’t hear me call her name, or even a regular whistle. I have to whistle loudly or clap, or wave to get her attention visually. She doesn’t respond at all when I ask if she wants to go for a walk (our daily routine and her FAVORITE thing). She just straight up doesn’t hear me- doesn’t turn her head, no perked up ears like she normally has when I ask her that beloved question. She was able to hear me normally prior to this med. I did a bit of online research (while carefully trying to avoid playing “Dr. Google” and freaking myself out prematurely), and I didn’t have to look far to find lots of reviews and online forums dedicated to this exact issue with this exact medication. While this med label/insert says hearing loss/deafness is rare, the reviewers online say otherwise. They are just as confused and heartbroken as I am now. I feel partially responsible for this, but I also trusted our vet (who my family and I have been with for over a decade), and I wasn’t warned about this side effect. Maybe bc my dog has been prescribed this med in the past, they thought it would be safe? Which makes sense and obviously this was not done maliciously. Either way, I’m going to talk with our vet to make sure we do everything we can to (hopefully) restore my dog’s hearing. I’ve read that the hearing loss is sometimes partially/fully resolved after a few weeks, but I’ve also read plenty of reviews of people’s dogs (usually senior-aged) going completely & permanently deaf within a couple days of administering this med (some of whom have also used it before.) I just needed to put this out there. Talk to your vet throughly about this, *ESPECIALLY* if you have an older dog. From what I’ve read so far, the hearing loss/deafness side effect is NOT as rare as the med leaflet suggests. Please take this info consideration before putting these drops into your doggo’s ears. If my girl doesn’t fully regain her hearing, I will do everything it takes to accommodate her- she is my world. But these side effects NEED to be addressed FAR more between vets and pet owners. Honestly it’s surprising to me that this med is still so widely prescribed- there are so many people out there with similar stories. :( Take care all.

Absolutely Horrible Drug
My vet gave us no information that this medication could cause deafness. My sweet 13yr old miniature american eskimo is now completely deaf. Heartbroken is an understatement, we feel awful for giving him these drops, he could hear fine before. He’s confused, he can’t be left to wander because he won’t hear when we call, he can’t even hear when we ring the doorbell or come home. Disgusting drug. How can something used to prevent deafness (due to infection), have a side effect that causes deafness??? This drug is clearly faulty and need to be discontinued,

DO NOT USE THIS! Dangerous
For a slight irritation in one of our Pom's ears, Banfield prescribed 14 days of Mometmax in both ears Now she is stone deaf. Merck is quoted as saying 80% of dogs with this result recover, but there is NO scientific basis for that statement. Mometamax's potential for causing deafness has been known and reported for over a decade, but no clear warning has ever been published, either in the product literature, on Merck's website, or by the FDA.
