About this product

What is Atopica (cyclosporine oral solution) for Cats?

Atopica for Cats is an oral solution used to control feline allergic dermatitis (allergic skin disease) as seen as broken skin, including facial and neck (miliary dermatitis, eosinophilic plaques, and self-induced alopecia). Signs of allergic skin disease include itching, chewing, licking, skin lesions and hair loss. Some cats may develop lesions that may even appear on the face and neck. Atopica requires a prescription from your veterinarian. For atopic dermatitis in dogs, we recommend Atopica for Dogs.

For:

Cats (at least 6 months of age and weighing at least 3 pounds)

Benefits:

  • Controls feline allergic dermatitis
  • Significantly reduces itching and skin lesions
  • Comes in an easy-to-administer liquid formulation and includes oral syringe
  • Most cats find the taste acceptable, but can be mixed with food

How it works:

Atopica for Cats is an oral solution that works by calming and soothing allergic skin conditions such as feline allergic dermatitis. It contains cyclosporine which stops the itching by blocking white blood cells from organizing and responding to infection. The oral solution is usually very well tolerated by cats and becomes easily absorbed in the intestinal tract.

Cautions:

For use in cats only. Do not rinse or clean the oral dosing syringe between uses. Please see the directions inside the Atopica for Cats box to ensure proper technique. Do not give to cats that have a history of cancer, feline leukemia or feline immunodeficiency virus or that are sensitive to cyclosporine. It is an immunosuppressant that may increase susceptibility to infection, development or neoplasia, and decrease response to vaccination. Use with caution in cats with diabetes mellitus or renal insufficiency, and with drugs that affect the P-450 enzyme system. For complete safety information, see the product label.

Brand Name:

Atopica for Cats

Generic Name:

Cyclosporine Modified oral solution

What is Atopica for Cats:

Atopica for Cats (cyclosporine modified) is an immunosuppressant available by prescription. Atopica for Cats is FDA approved for use in the treatment of feline allergic dermatitis in cats at least 6 months of age and weighing at least 3 pounds. Atopica for Cats is available as 5ml and 17ml oral solutions and comes with an oral syringe. The usual dose of Atopica for Cats is 3.2 mg/lb (7 mg/kg) orally 1 time a day for 4-6 weeks. Following this, the dose may be tapered to every other day or twice weekly as needed to maintain the therapeutic effect. Dosing of the liquid formulation is accomplished by a syringe that is marked with weight bands for easy dosing.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Atopica for Cats:

Tell your veterinarian if your pet has liver disease, kidney disease, cancer, high blood pressure, a viral, bacterial or fungal infection, or any other serious or chronic condition. Tell your veterinarian if your cat is pregnant or lactating, and if you plan to breed your cat.

How should this medication be given:

Give Atopica for Cats exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand these directions, ask your veterinarian or pharmacist to explain them to you. Always give Atopica for Cats with food or following a meal. Allow plenty of water for your pet to drink. Store Atopica for Cats at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Wash hands after administration. People with known hypersensitivity should avoid contact with atopica.

What happens if I miss giving a dose:

Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose you missed and give the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not give a double dose unless otherwise directed by your veterinarian.

What happens if I overdose my pet:

Seek emergency veterinary medical treatment.

What should I avoid while giving Atopica for Cats to my pet:

The safe use in breeding, pregnant or lactating cats has not been determined. Do not use Atopica for Cats in cats with a known allergy to the medication. The drug should not be used in cats with kidney disease, stomach ulcers, and certain blood disorders. Prolonged use of Atopica for Cats can result in bacterial or fungal infection related to a decreased effect of the immune system. During treatment, cats should avoid exposure to toxoplasma gondii.

What are the possible side effects of Atopica for Cats:

If any of the following serious side effects occur, stop giving Atopica for Cats and seek emergency veterinary medical attention: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue or face, and hives). Other less serious side effects may occur. Continue giving Atopica for Cats and talk to your veterinarian if your pet develops vomiting, soft stools or diarrhea, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, weight loss, loss of appetite, and change of hair coat. Persistent, progressive weight loss may result in hepatic lipidosis; monitoring of body weight is recommended. Other side effects may occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet.

What other drugs will affect Atopica for Cats:

There are many drug/drug interactions that occur when taking Atopica for Cats. Tell your veterinarian what medications your pet is currently using and any new products, including herbal remedies you may start to give. Drug/drug interactions could cause a decrease in effectiveness or an increase in side effects of either Atopica for Cats or the other medication being given. Examples of medications that may cause drug/drug interactions are: SMZ-TMP (Bactrim, Septra), gentamicin, etodolac (EtoGesic), piroxicam (Feldene), ketoconazole (Nizoral), cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), itraconazole (Sporanox), methylprednisolone (Medrol), erythromycin, Allopurinol (Zyloprim), metoclopramide (Reglan), prednisolone, digoxin (Lanoxin), any type of vaccination.

Miserably difficult to administer :(
My cat needs this, but she absolutely hates it. It tastes awful and she drools miserably and hides for at least a half hour after getting it. I saw a suggestion to use a long thin pipette to get it far enough back to bypass the taste buds. It works better if you can manage it, but translating the mg per lbs dosage to ml, then remeasuring the dose for a pipette (which is typically 1 ml and I need .03 ml) is very approximate. Couldn't they provide a better dosing syringe? My vet says she read a shot may be coming, but if so I wish they'd hurry up before my relationship with my cat is ruined.

getting SO expensive
While this product has DOUBLED in price, our cat, Junior , will rip his skin off without it. At 17 he has had severe allergies, PICA and OCD for years and it gets progressively worse as he gets older. Atopica helps keep his issues under control. We love the quirky guy...

Expensive, but worth it!
This is an expensive medication, but I get it for less money at PetMeds than at my vets. It does work and my cat has to have it. It keeps her from digging out her fur because of a type of a dermatitis she has. It was initially prescribed for her by an animal dermatologist about 5 years ago. Without it she scratches herself into a frenzy and gets infection where she scratches.

Consider the capsules for dogs…
Our cat has severe allergic dermatitis and had been on prednisolone for a month. She healed up on it, but it’s not safe for long term use and we tried weaning her off twice but the dermatitis flared up worse than ever! We went to a specialist who prescribed this and we are overlapping with the pred (her skin looks great now but we haven’t started tapering off the pred yet) but it’s very very hard to get her to eat it even mixed into tuna churu or other tasty things when she’s hungry. I force fed it a couple times but she will start hiding from me if I do that. Then she started having bad diarrhea. She will eat her pred in pill pockets so I asked the vet if we could try the dog capsules and we now have those. They can be frozen which reduces the GI side effects, and she is eating a 25 and a 10 mg capsule. The 25mg capsule is a bit large but she eats it in the pill pocket, and she has had normal appetite and stools since switching to the capsules. We give her a canned food meal afterward to make sure the capsules don’t stick in her throat. Cats are very prone to esophageal damage from pills that don’t “go down” properly so be aware of that… but if your cat has trouble with the liquid it may be worth considering. Also the capsules are even more $$$$ for the dose 😭

It works! But
My cats lip was so severe that nothing worked but this after 7 months, it didn't take it all way away but enough that I was ready for my own relief, everyday fighting with a cat then she hide on us, I can't understand why these companies can't make a flavoring that cats like! Same with wormers cats hate them! The product is good for problem but creates other problems, after a few months I stop giving it because of it all! Then start over down the road.

The only thing that has worked!
My kitty has been suffering from skin allergies for a year or so. She would be visibly itchy (abruptly stopping when playing with her mousie to scratch or munch off her hair) and slowly started munching off all her hair on her arms, entire belly, legs and tail until she was bald! We put her on steroids for a few months and though her hair loss was at a stand still, she didn't really grow her hair back as she was still munching the same areas. We are SO glad her vet recommended us to try Atopica. It's like a miracle! Her hair has been growing back every day for the past few weeks we've given it to her! She's almost to her normal self again. Highly recommend you try this for feline skin allergies. Tip: The first few times you give it to your cat, make sure they have some food in their bellies. We mixed it with our cat's food and her stomach wasn't used to it—She was nonstop puking that morning. Now, we have no issues when we mix it with her food.

Not so great
Our Pepper was put on Atopica for her allergies, At first we thought she was doing really well, but after 2 months, the poor thing has lost a significant about of weight. If you read the packaging materials of side effect and adverse effect, you'd see our poor girls picture. Think twice about giving your pets this medication, you are their voice

Miracle!
At about the one year mark my cat started scratching his head and neck so badly he would make himself bleed. He licked almost all of the fur off his belly. It was red and ozzing. Vet did all kinds of tests and determined he had allergies. They told me they could run a test but it was very costly and would only narrow down to environmental or diet. I tried every hypoallergenic, sensitive stomach, limited ingredient foods i could find. Having 5 other cats who all are free fed made it quite costly. Many trips to different vets all proved to be useless. One of the visits the vet administered an antibiotic shot. Next day his eyes looked really weird. One pupil was really small and the other really big. That cleared up and then one of his eyes the inner eyelid wouldn't retract. Brought him back to the vet and they said they had no idea what could be causing it,that potentially it was neurological. Gave me eye drops (didn't help) eventually it went back on its own. After extensive research i came across this product and at that point was willing to try just about anything to get him relief. It was a bit of a struggle to get the medication into him as he soon learned to avoid me. After about a week we started to notice his sores were drying up and he wasn't scratching much. I am very pleased to report this medication worked so well for us.
