What is OPTIMMUNE (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) Ophthalmic Ointment?

OPTIMMUNE (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) Ophthalmic Ointment is the only Veterinarian, FDA approved, ophthalmic medication indicated for the management of Dry Eyes, also known as chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK) keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), in dogs. Canine dry eye is a common problem, and it can be serious! It is an immune system disorder that attacks the tear glands in the eyes and destroys their ability to produce tears. This can cause pain and lead to permanent blindness, so early diagnosis is important. Optimmune® (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) is prescribed to decrease inflammation, increase tear production, and improve the signs of disease, but it is not a cure.

Dry eye is a lifelong condition, that requires lifelong care. But with proper treatment, this immune system disorder can be managed. Your veterinarian may prescribe OPTIMMUNE® to manage chronic KCS. It works by increasing natural tear production and may help regulate KCS. In the long run, controlling the disease will help improve comfort for your dog's eyes. Your veterinarian may temporarily prescribe artificial tears to help with lubrication, as well as an antibiotic if your dog also shows signs of an eye infection. The sooner treatment is started, the better the long-term result. 

Cautions:

For ophthalmic use in dogs only. The clinical effects of OPTIMMUNE® Ophthalmic Ointment have not been determined in dogs with keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) due to the following conditions: congenital alacrima, sulfonamide usage, canine distemper virus, metabolic disease, surgical removal of the third eyelid gland, and facial nerve paralysis with loss of the palpebral reflex. Safety has not been determined in cases of pre-existing viral or fungal ocular infections, nor in puppies, pregnant bitches, or dogs used for breeding. Withdrawal of OPTIMMUNE® Ophthalmic Ointment therapy resulted in rapid clinical regression indicating the need for long-term continual therapy for almost all cases of chronic KCS.

What is the most important thing I should know about OPTIMMUNE (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) Ophthalmic Ointment?

OPTIMMUNE (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) Ophthalmic Ointment is the only FDA approved, immunosuppressive prescription canine medication, used to treat chronic dry eye. Dry eye destroys a dog's ability to produce tears and can lead to permanent blindness. It's also painful. That's why it's important to diagnose dry eye, as early as possible. It can take months for tear production to significantly improve; however, your dog's eyes may appear to be improved quickly. You must continue treatment with OPTIMMUNE as prescribed. Dry eye cannot be "cured." Your dog will need treatment for the rest of his or her life. If you stop giving your dog OPTIMMUNE, the disease will likely begin to progress again. Regular checkups with your veterinarian are also an important part of ongoing treatment. Your dog's tear production should be regularly monitored. 

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before using OPTIMMUNE (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) Ophthalmic Ointment on my pet?

You can’t tell if your dog has dry eye just by looking at the eyes. But there is a simple way to find out. Ask your veterinarian to perform a Schirmer Tear Test for dry eye. Your veterinarian will place a special strip of paper called a Schirmer Tear Test in your dog's eyes. The strip measures a dog's ability to make tears. It takes about 60 seconds and is well tolerated by most dogs. Both eyes should be tested because results may be different in each eye. Inform your Veterinarian if your dog suffers from Diabetes, Hypothroidism, or Cushing's Disease. These three conditions are also associated with a reduced ability to make tears. If your dog has one of these diseases, they are also at greater risk for developing dry eye.

How should OPTIMMUNE (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) Ophthalmic Ointment be used?

Use this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask your pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Wash your hands prior to using the eye ointment. Apply a ¼ inch strip of the ointment into the lower eyelid. Store OPTIMMUNE (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) Ophthalmic Ointment at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep the tube properly capped. 

What are the potential side effects of OPTIMMUNE (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) Ophthalmic Ointment?

While OPTIMMUNE® Ophthalmic Ointment is generally safe for dogs, there are potential side effects, which are generally mild and may include: burning, redness, tearing, discharge, pain, itching, stinging, or blurring of the vision may occur. These side effects are usually not serious, but if any of them persist or seem particularly bothersome, consult your veterinarian. If you notice any unusual or severe reactions, such as signs of an allergic reaction (swelling, rash, difficulty breathing), seek veterinary attention immediately.

What happens if I miss applying a dose of OPTIMMUNE (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) Ophthalmic Ointment?

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and apply the next one as directed. Do not give a double dose of the medication.

What happens if I overdose my pet on OPTIMMUNE (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) Ophthalmic Ointment?

An overdose of this medication is unlikely. If an overdose is suspected, wash the eye with water and seek emergency veterinary medical treatment.

What should I avoid while applying OPTIMMUNE (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) Ophthalmic Ointment on my pet?

It is crucial to apply the ointment exactly as directed by your veterinarian, typically as a ¼ inch strip to the affected eye(s) every 12 hours. Maintaining the sterility of the tube by not touching the opening to any surface, including your dog's eyes or your hands, is vital to avoid contamination and potential infection. This medication may cause blurred vision. Continue the treatment as prescribed and do not stop abruptly without consulting your veterinarian, even if your pet's condition appears to improve. Stopping too soon may prevent full recovery or cause the condition to worsen.

Before using OPTIMMUNE (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) Ophthalmic Ointment, tell your veterinarian if your pet is using other eye ointment or eye medications. Drugs other than those listed may also interact with OPTIMMUNE (0.2% Cyclosporine, USP) Ophthalmic Ointment. Talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist before giving any prescription or over the counter medicines.
