Healthy Food for Your Pet

What is Healthy Pet Food?

Healthy pet food supports your cat or dog's wellness.

You can meet your pet's nutritional needs with dry, canned, dehydrated, fresh pet food, or a diet made up of combination of different foods.

Dry pet food is convenient, affordable, and can be mixed with other foods to optimize its nutritional benefits. Kibble can be soaked in warm water to provide hydration, improve digestibility, and allow easy chewing for pets with dental issues.

Dry food is higher in carbs than other pet food options. Carbohydrates provide energy, but they're not essential to cats and dogs. Diets that are high in carbs have been linked to weight gain and diabetes in pets.

Low glycemic index carbs like legumes and brown rice burn more slowly than high GI carbs like corn and white rice, keeping your pet's energy and blood sugar levels more stable between meals.

Dehydrated or freeze-dried pet food must be rehydrated before serving. It's often less processed than other foods, and can be high in protein and low in carbohydrates. In general, a higher protein diet with animal protein sources at the top of the ingredients list will help keep your pet satiated and energized, and will be more likely to pique their appetite. However, high protein diets are not recommended for pets with kidney disease.

Canned or wet food is typically high in protein and low in carbs, and it's also a good source of moisture. Pet food with a high moisture content keeps your cat or dog hydrated even if they do not drink enough water. Proper hydration supports all of the body's processes, including digestion, neurological function, and circulation. It's also needed to flush the urinary tract, protecting against infection and kidney stones.

Fresh pet food can be homemade or commercially prepared, and may be raw or cooked. Fresh foods are often a great source of moisture and protein, and typically low in carbs, making them a healthy choice. Fresh food should only be fed if it's complete and balanced, either formulated to meet AAFCO standards or homemade under the guidance of a veterinary nutritionist.

How Will a Healthy Diet Help My Pet?

Your cat or dog's diet is one of the most important aspects of maintaining their overall wellness. A healthy diet made up of high-quality foods can help:

  • Improve symptoms of sensitivities, which may include itchy skin, recurring ear or skin infections, and indigestion
  • Support muscle growth and recovery
  • Support neurological development in growing puppies and kittens
  • Protect urinary tract health
  • Support mobility and reduce inflammation in senior pets

Talk to your vet before making any major changes to your pet's diet, especially for kittens, puppies, senior pets, and those with chronic health conditions.
