Limping in Dogs and Cats
How are limps treated in dogs and cats?
The treatment of limping in dogs and cats will depend upon the degree and severity of the limping, as well as the underlying cause found through careful diagnostic testing. Treatment may include antibiotics for tick-borne or infectious causes of limping. Splinting and/or pinning and plating may be needed in fracture cases. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents including prescription medications such as Rimadyl, Metacam or Quellin may be used successfully in many cases. Newer pain medications including Gabapentin, or Amantadine are being increasingly utilized by veterinarians as add-on drugs in pets who are limping and/or experiencing pain.

Are there supplements & homeopathic remedies to help pets that are limping?
There are numerous supplements that may be tried in limping pets. The herbal aspirin derivative white willow bark is sometimes quite useful. Herbs such as Yucca Intensive by Azmira have been quite successful at easing the pain of degenerative joint disease and arthritis. Combination homeopathic remedies such as T-Relief are recommended by many veterinarians. Individual homeopathic remedies such as arnica, hypericum, rhus tox, and ruta graveolens may provide symptomatic relief in limping pets depending upon the specific details of each case.
