What is Desmopressin?
Desmopressin is used to treat Central Diabetes Insipidus in dogs and cats. It’s a synthetic form of vasopressin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that regulates urine production and water retention. Cats and dogs that suffer from Central Diabetes Insipidus do not produce enough vasopressin. When used as prescribed by your veterinarian, Desmopressin can help resolve excessive thirst and increased urination. The drug can also cause an increase in blood clotting, and is sometimes used to treat pets with Von Willebrand disease, a genetic disorder that prevents the blood from clotting efficiently. Desmopressin is sold by the tablet and requires a prescription from your veterinarian.
