Vet Review | There is now an excellent, overall safe oral chewable medication in the fight against flea infestation. This product, which has the same main ingredient as the topical product Advantage, that has been out for decades, may have an important place in a comprehensive flea control program. Especially during the warmer, summer months, the increased exposure to fleas and other parasites will often overwhelm existing products, thus occasionally allowing adult fleas to be seen on the pet. While many of the currently available products overall do an outstanding job in overall flea control, there can on occasion be brief lapses in flea control, where adult fleas may be seen. In these situations, as well as when guardians first discover flea infestations on pets, not on any preventative products, Advantus can fill the void. Most pets will readily accept these chewable wafers, which offers dramatic and quick kill of adult fleas. This quick kill of adult fleas will occur within minutes to an hour, and with almost all adult fleas gone within 4 hours, often before they have had the chance to lay eggs. This is especially important in those younger dogs under one year of age, who can quickly become severely anemic when overrun by adult flea exposure. Much easier to apply than shampoos, sprays, powders or collars, no product works as fast in my experience and opinion. Most pets tolerate the product very well, with only rare digestive upset seen. I have only seen ever more rare cases of neurological weakness. I also like the fact that this product can be used up to once daily as needed, which is especially important, while other, broader spectrum flea products that kill larvae and eggs are implemented in the flea control program. I give this product an overall rating of 4.5 with an ease of application/taste of 5 out of 5. | An exciting new development in the fight against fleas and ticks is the long lasting chewable tablet called Bravecto, The active ingredient fluralaner, is a very effective ectoparasiticide, which acts on the nervous system of the parasite, without affecting the dog's nervous system. When given to dogs, this product starts killing fleas within 2 hours, and ticks a short time after that. Protection will last for approximately 12 weeks for fleas, and 8-12 weeks for ticks. In fact, clinical experience has shown it to be effective in treating and controlling 4 species of ticks, many of which are involved in transmitting disease to both dogs and people. It is even safe to use in pregnant and lactating animals, as well as most pets over the age of 6 months. I would use caution in using this or any other pesticide in sick, geriatric or pets with chronic immune mediated disease. Another minor drawback is that the fleas or tick must be ingesting a blood meal or feeding on your pet before becoming effective, thus there is still a remote possibility of transfer of certain tick born illnesses on rare occasion. Unlike most topical products that can potentially be washed or bathed off, the added benefit of giving a pill minimizes pesticide exposure for human family members, as well as being effective within a very short period of time. I give this product an overall rating of a 5 with an ease of use, and efficacy a 5 as well. | Within the past year there has been an exciting development in the battle against fleas and ticks. For years, veterinarians have relied on topical medications for control of fleas and ticks, however many formulations are greasy, as well as some sensitive pets may have an allergic reaction to contact some of them. Many clients also worry about the exposure of humans to topical flea and tick pesticides. That is why the exciting new product from Merial known as Nexgard has been such a welcome addition to our flea and tick treatment and prevention options. By using a the ingredient, afoxolaner, Merial has come out with a new product that most fleas and ticks are certainly susceptible. Dogs also LOVE the soft, beef flavored chewable, even without meals. It has also been shown to be safe at up to 5 times the recommended dose. The only down side to this product is that the parasites must bite the dog to be affected, and in some cases this may take up to many hours for this to occur. However, studies as well as clinical experience with this product show that is it very effective in preventing Lyme, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. This makes it essential as part of any year round parasite prevention program in our dogs. The only rare side effects I have seen are mild digestive upset. I therefore give this product an overall rating of a 4.5, with an ease of use of a 5 out of 5. |
