Does it have long-term side effects? | Cushing's Syndrome in dogs has been reported in association of prolonged or repeated steroid therapy | The vast majority of patients with drug related adverse reactions have recovered when the signs are recognized, the drug is withdrawn, and veterinary care, if appropriate, is initiated. Owners should be advised of the importance of periodic follow up for all dogs during administration of any NSAID. | Laboratory studies in anesthetized dogs and clinical field studies have demonstrated that Quellin is well tolerated in dogs after oral administration. |
Cautions | Without first talking to your veterinarian, dp not give your pet any over-the-counter or other prescription medications while giving prednisone. There are possible side effects, including insomnia, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, and fatigue. | Do Not Give To Cats | Do Not Give To Cats |
What are Customers saying Pros | ... a small price to pay for the rest of her skin to be doing so good. | Our 11 year old Beagle was born with a left shoulder, joint deformity. AS she advanced in years, difficulity in walking resulted. Previcox restored normal joint movement and walking in two days. | These work VERY well for my girl. Her legs were very stiff and she couldn't hardly get up off the floor, but after just 2 days of these pills, she has that spunk back in her eye and moves around with no problems! She has even been jumping up on the bed again!! Love that these pills work so wonderfully! |
What are Customers saying Cons | ...it started to have a negative effect on kitty. | After one day of taking it he started vomiting and had severe diarrhea... | I ordered this generic version of Rimadyl chewables because of the price. However, these chewables do not taste the same (apparently) as the Rimadyl and my old girl won't touch them... even smothered in peanut butter, she won't go near them. |
Vet Recommendations | Prednisolone is a drug I will usually only reach for joint pain and/or stiffness if other prescribed nonsteroidal anti inflammatory have failed to work. While cortisone like drugs such as prednisolone can work to reduce inflammation and pain quite quickly, I do worry about the weakening effect on the ligaments and bone when used long term. I will usually use prednisolone over prednisone in geriatric pets or pets with preexisting liver disease. When used long term, it is important to monitor blood work to check for organ toxicity. The biggest side effects seen are usually increased thirst/urination/appetite, and occasionally diarrhea and vomiting. It is also important to monitor for blood loss as well. I give this product an overall ranking of 3.5 out of 5. | Previcox is another effective prescription nonsteroidal anti inflammatory medication that has found favor among many veterinarians in recent years. Supposedly more friendly on the liver and kidneys than some of the other non steroidal anti inflammatory medications it is especially helpful in managing arthritis and pain in middle age and older dogs. I have only rarely seen digestive tract reactions when using this product. I give this an overall ranking of a 4 out of 5. | From the trustworthy and reliable drug company Bayer comes a brand new formulation (known as Quellin) of a time and tested non steroidal anti inflammatory drug carprofen and Rimadyl. For those dogs who are difficult to medicate or pill, this easy to use soft chewable is well accepted by most dogs, and avoid the use of pill pockets. They are also scored tablets, which allow for flexible dosing of dogs of all weights. This non steroidal anti inflammatory has many benefits in managing pain and inflammation, associated with surgery, as well as the inflammation associated with injuries and chronic arthritis. When given with food, this cuts down on the chance of digestive upset. In any pet undergoing chronic therapy with a drug like Quellin, blood work and urine analysis should be done to test for any pre existing medical conditions. This is an exciting new development with this chewable formulation of a very important anti inflammatory medication. I give it an overall rating of a 4.5 with an ease of use and efficacy/taste of a 5. |
