Vet Review |
The fast-acting nature of Advantage XD is one of its standout features, as it starts killing fleas within 30 minutes to 4 hours, providing rapid relief for cats. Its long-lasting formula is another major benefit, offering protection for up to two months per application, which is twice the duration of many other flea treatments. The active ingredient, spinetoram, is derived from natural soil microbes, making it a preferred option for veterinarians concerned about using harsh chemicals on sensitive pets. However, as with any topical treatment, some cats may experience mild skin reactions like irritation or hair loss at the application site. Despite this, Advantage XD remains a top choice for its effectiveness and ease of use, though in cases of severe infestations, veterinarians may recommend additional environmental flea control measures. |
Because of the difficulties in client compliance in using multiple preventatives in cats for internal and external parasites, a new and comprehensive topical has been developed for kitties. Like the Bravecto Topical product for dogs, this topical for cats is labeled to work selectively on the nervous system of the fleas/ticks rather than mammalian species like the cat. However, on rare occasions even in cats with no prior history of neurological reactions, very rare neurological reactions have been observed in the field, which highlights the cat's unique sensitivity to any pesticide and drug. With the addition of moxidectin to this formulation, this particular product offers additional protection against both roundworm and hookworm intestinal parasites and heartworms, which is an important feature, particularly for outside kitties. While this product rapidly kills adult fleas and ticks who bite the cat, unlike the sister product, Bravecto for Dogs, this product does not repel these external parasites. Another important difference is that the Bravecto Plus product should not be used in pregnant or nursing kitties. The only other issue I have seen with this product is the occasional irritation at the site of application with even rarer digestive tract upset. With all that being said, the product offers excellent coverage against most major internal and external parasites in the cat. I give this product an overall rating of 4 with ease of application of a 5. | Fleas are easily the most common external parasite that plague cats throughout the country. Fleas have been shown to not only cause weakness and anemia in affected cats, but also transmit dangerous infectious diseases, including bartonellosis, an also increasing threat to humans. Cheristin is made with the same main ingredient as Comfortis for cats, and acts uniquely on the nervous system of the flea. Unlike flea prevention tablets, Cheristin starts killing fleas within 30 minutes and almost 100 percent of fleas within 12 hours. With the easy to use applicator, this product has been shown to be quite effective for one month. The most common, yet rare side effect I have seen in cats is an allergic reaction or hair loss at the site of application, and even less commonly vomiting and lethargy. It is an excellent and fast acting, effective product with an overall rating of a 4.5 with an ease of administration of a 5. |
