Vet Review | While this product offers an economic alternative for killing/repelling fleas and ticks for 5 months, as well as preventing the development of flea eggs into larvae and adults, I have personally not found this product effective in my experience and opinion. The clients I have spoken to who have been pleased with this product have found it more effective as a flea preventative, rather than once an infestation already exists, where other products such as topical front line or advantage would be preferred. I have also seen that in some dogs local skin irritation and hives can occasionally occur in sensitive pets, which usually resolve once the collar is removed. I also have concern for cancer and neurological effects with exposure to any prolonged pesticides. While it is a nice benefit that the collar works even when wet, because of my concerns about overall efficacy and safety, I do not recommend use of this product. I give it an overall rating of a 2 with an efficacy a 2 and ease of use a 5. | While an economical alternative to the more expensive topicals like Advantage or Frontline, because of safety concerns I cant recommend this product to my clients. Over the years I have seen too many side effects from topical irritation to rare and sometimes severe neurological and/or seizures in some pets. I have also found it to not be as effective in flea control as with advantage or front line. While it is marketed to work against adult fleas, prevent development of flea eggs into larvae and adults, as well as killing ticks for 3 months, once an infestation is in place I have not found this product to be as effective as the competitors in my opinion and experience. One of the nice few benefits I have seen is the killing and repelling of mosquitoes with use of this spot on product. While it is easy to apply and water based, many of my clients have reported irritation reactions as well as greasy fur at the site of application. It is for these reasons that I give this product an overall rating of a 2 with an efficacy of a 2 with ease of use a 5. | This wonderful product whose flea and tick efficacy DIRECTLY ON CONTACT is based on topical permethrin which damages theses pests nervous systems, and when applied is effective, gentle on most dogs, long lasting (up to 6 weeks with most species of ticks)(5 weeks with fleas)(up to 4 weeks for dog lice and mites), and is very easy to apply, in addition to being economical and available without a prescription from your vet. It is safe enough to use on puppies over 4 weeks of age, but a consultation with your vet should be done before starting especially if your pet is old or has a chronic disease. . It also kills and repels mosquitoes as well. The major disadvantage with this product (unlike others like Frontline) is that it cannot be used on cats or near cats because of the permethrins in it. It is also marginally water soluble, and thus if your dog swims frequently it may need to be applied as often as every 2 weeks, which is off label use, but will last up to one month in those dogs not frequently bathed or who swim often. The rare side effects I have seen are usually mild, mainly being redness or hair loss of the skin where applied, and sometimes lethargy, vomiting or drooling if application spot is licked at. These however are not common in my experience. |
