Vet Review | Fleas are easily the most common external parasite that plague cats throughout the country. Fleas have been shown to not only cause weakness and anemia in affected cats, but also transmit dangerous infectious diseases, including bartonellosis, an also increasing threat to humans. Cheristin is made with the same main ingredient as Comfortis for cats, and acts uniquely on the nervous system of the flea. Unlike flea prevention tablets, Cheristin starts killing fleas within 30 minutes and almost 100 percent of fleas within 12 hours. With the easy to use applicator, this product has been shown to be quite effective for one month. The most common, yet rare side effect I have seen in cats is an allergic reaction or hair loss at the site of application, and even less commonly vomiting and lethargy. It is an excellent and fast acting, effective product with an overall rating of a 4.5 with an ease of administration of a 5. | This is one of my favorite and most effective products in preventing tick infestations on dogs of all sizes, as well as preventing the tick born diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehlrichia and Anaplasmosis. When some of the topical products have failed in some patients, I have found this collar quite valuable in significantly cutting down on tick burdens in these dogs. The effects are long lasting for up to 3 months preventing ticks from even attaching to dogs, and thus cutting down on tick exposure to humans as well. The only problems in terms of efficacy I have even seen with this product is when animal guardians apply the collar too loosely to their pets, which can cut down on its efficacy against ticks.. In order for this collar to work effectively, it must be fitted snugly against the pet's neck, where one is just able to get two fingers under the collar. If the collar is applied too loosely I have occasionally seen pets ingest this collar, leading to serious systemic reactions. The only other downside in using this collar is if the pet spends a significant time swimming during the warmer months. The collar's efficacy is cut down significantly if it is submerged in water or exposed to drenching rains. However when properly fitted to a dog's neck, this is one of the most effective products in preventing tick infestations on the market. | Sentinel is a wonderful combination of the heartworm prevention pill interceptor and the flea control product program both in this one pill. Many clients enjoy the convenience of having such broad acting internal and external parasites in one pill, without having to worry about giving two separate medicines. Lufenuron, which is the main flea control ingredient, stops the flea life cycle in its track at the egg and larval stage, thus being like a birth control pill for fleas who get on our pets. Given that the main problem of fleas is how rapidly they reproduce, this pill literally stops escalating growth of flea populations, before they can become established in our homes, where most of the flea life cycle occurs. The main disadvantage to this product is that it does not kill or repel adult fleas, so in situations with already established heavy infestations, it is best combined with a great topical product like advantage or front line or with the oral adulticide flea pill Capstar for maximal effect. The only other rare disadvantage I see is the slight increase in reactions when two products are combined into one like this, but fortunately this is not common in clinical practice. With milbemycin for prevention of heartworms and controlling and treating most common intestinal worms, I overall highly recommend this versatile product. |
