Vet Review | There is now an excellent, overall safe oral chewable medication in the fight against flea infestation. This product, which has the same main ingredient as the topical product Advantage, that has been out for decades, may have an important place in a comprehensive flea control program. Especially during the warmer, summer months, the increased exposure to fleas and other parasites will often overwhelm existing products, thus occasionally allowing adult fleas to be seen on the pet. While many of the currently available products overall do an outstanding job in overall flea control, there can on occasion be brief lapses in flea control, where adult fleas may be seen. In these situations, as well as when guardians first discover flea infestations on pets, not on any preventative products, Advantus can fill the void. Most pets will readily accept these chewable wafers, which offers dramatic and quick kill of adult fleas. This quick kill of adult fleas will occur within minutes to an hour, and with almost all adult fleas gone within 4 hours, often before they have had the chance to lay eggs. This is especially important in those younger dogs under one year of age, who can quickly become severely anemic when overrun by adult flea exposure. Much easier to apply than shampoos, sprays, powders or collars, no product works as fast in my experience and opinion. Most pets tolerate the product very well, with only rare digestive upset seen. I have only seen ever more rare cases of neurological weakness. I also like the fact that this product can be used up to once daily as needed, which is especially important, while other, broader spectrum flea products that kill larvae and eggs are implemented in the flea control program. I give this product an overall rating of 4.5 with an ease of application/taste of 5 out of 5. | Belonging to the latest generation of flea/tick parasiticides(known as Isoxazoline medications), these palatable, beef flavored chewable tablets kills fleas quite effective, with most adult fleas being killed within 8 hours. One of the downsides, as compared with Vectra 3D is that Credilio does not repel either fleas or ticks, and has no effect on biting mosquitoes, which are the main vectors that transmit heartworms to dogs. Credilio and products of its class are one of the most effective products against several species of severe disease transmitting ticks, including ones that transmit Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Anaplasmosis, which have been increasing in incidence in recent years. As with other members of this drug class, we have also used this drug in treatment and prevention of both demedex mites and scabies mites, although this is an off label use. Giving with a full meal reduces risks of digestive reaction. Overall the tablet is well tolorated, but occasional diarrhea, vomiting or digestive upset is seen. I would look to one of the other products like Vectra 3D, if there is a history of significant neurologic disease or seizures. I give this product an overall rating of a 4 out of 5. | An exciting and brand new product now available combines the main ingredient of Interceptor milbemycin with a powerful flea insecticide known as spinosad. Given as a once monthly heartworm preventative, this product also will control and prevent whipworms, hookworms and roundworms, in addition to preventing heartworms. The additional ingredient spinosad allows effective flea and these internal parasite control all in one pill, making it quite convenient for clients. As with any pesticide rare digestive tract and neurological side effects may occur but this has not been a major problem in clinical trials. Since it is relatively new I will have to see how this product performs on the fleas but it seems to have excellent potential. I give this product an overall rating of a 5 with an ease of administration a 5 as well, taste a 5. |
