Vet Review | This topical product that has been around for years is really a potluck type product in my opinion and experience. Many of my clients, who could not afford the other commonly veterinary recommended topical flea/tick pesticides, have found this product a quite helpful much more economic and effective product than the more expensive competitors. . However I have had equal number of clients, who have used this product, been quite disappointed with the results, and their infestations seemed to have gotten worse after starting with this product. I personally don't recommend this product, for my biggest concern that overrides any economic savings that clients have, are the sometimes serious side effects I have seen with certain sensitive pets in my practice and experience. This has ranged from local irritation and greasiness in the coat, to an almost burn like eruption at place of application, to more serious systemic effects like excess drooling, ear itching/irritation and in rare cases neurological side effects including suspected seizures shortly after application. Although these side effects are not common, I feel their severity over rides my ability to recommend this product, I would stick with the more widely veterinary recommended products like Frontline, Advantage or Advantix. I therefore give this product an overall rating of a 2. Its efficacy is a 2 and its ease of use is a 4. | I recently completed a small clinical trial using Flea 4X topical product for dogs in my veterinary clinic. And I must say that the initial reports on efficacy and safety has been excellent. With the main ingredient being the tried and tested fipronil, this product is very effective in controlling fleas, ticks, chewing lice and mosquitoes. It is also labelled to control mites that cause sarcoptic mange in dogs as well. This product is a wonderful generic alternative to the Frontline product that has been out for years. Clients have loved the economic savings of this product over similar topical flea and tick preventatives. It is manufactured exclusively in the United States, as well as having the trustworthy and reliable 1800petmeds label on the packaging. It is also water proof for those canine patients who spend a lot of time outside and/or swimming during the summer months. Clients are reporting back to me quick flea and tick killing that lasts up to several weeks in treated pets. I highly recommend this product to those canine guardians seeking out an effective and economic alternative to similar products on the market. | This is one of my favorite and most effective products in preventing tick infestations on dogs of all sizes, as well as preventing the tick born diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehlrichia and Anaplasmosis. When some of the topical products have failed in some patients, I have found this collar quite valuable in significantly cutting down on tick burdens in these dogs. The effects are long lasting for up to 3 months preventing ticks from even attaching to dogs, and thus cutting down on tick exposure to humans as well. The only problems in terms of efficacy I have even seen with this product is when animal guardians apply the collar too loosely to their pets, which can cut down on its efficacy against ticks.. In order for this collar to work effectively, it must be fitted snugly against the pet's neck, where one is just able to get two fingers under the collar. If the collar is applied too loosely I have occasionally seen pets ingest this collar, leading to serious systemic reactions. The only other downside in using this collar is if the pet spends a significant time swimming during the warmer months. The collar's efficacy is cut down significantly if it is submerged in water or exposed to drenching rains. However when properly fitted to a dog's neck, this is one of the most effective products in preventing tick infestations on the market. |
