Vet Review | I recently completed a small clinical trial using the Flea 3X topical product for cats. And I must say that the initial reports on the safety and efficacy of this product has been excellent. With the main ingredient being the tried and tested fipronil, this product is very effective in controlling fleas, ticks and chewing lice. Clients have loved the economic savings of this generic alternative product to Frontline. It is also manufactured exclusively in the United States, as well as carrying the trustworthy and reliable 1-800-PetMeds brand on the packaging and label. Thus far, clients have reported back that fleas and ticks are killed very rapidly, and that protection lasts for up to several weeks. I therefore can highly recommend this product to all of the feline guardians as a wonderful and economic alternative to more expensive topical products on the market. | One of my favorite and most widely prescribed flea and tick control products in practice front line top spot offers not only the ease of application in one spot, where it collects in the hair follicles and skin oils and gradually released over the month, but also a wide area of safety in most pets, including breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs. . It will kill adult fleas and larvae by selectively affecting the parasite's nervous system. Efficacy against flea eggs is variable in my experience and opinion. It will also kill chewing lice and some veterinarians, including myself have seen it work to help control demodectic mange and ear mites, although it is it not approved for use for these uses. This versatile product will also kill all stages of various ticks including brown dog ticks, american dog ticks, lone star ticks and deer ticks. I have also used it to control sarcoptic mange infestations in dogs, but will often go to topical revolution first in sarcoptic mange or ivermectin as my first choices for scabies. In general I find that fleas and ticks are generally killed before they have the chance to transmit diseases in patients, usually being close to 100% effective within 24 to 48 hours. The formulation is water proof so it is certainly appropriate to use in those outdoor dogs who love to swim. I have only seen occasional/rare side effects at the sight of application, and even more rare systemic reactions like digestive upset or neurological reactions or blood disorders in extremely sensitive pets. However these reactions are rare in my experience. In geriatric patients or sick patients or those with chronic disease it is important to consult with your veterinarian before applying this or any other topical flea and tick product. | From one of the most reliable drug companies Merial, makers of Frontline Plus, is Tritak, which was introduced a few years ago, and offers a three prong protection against multiple parasites, including fleas, ticks, chewing lice and mites. This is probably one of the most rapidly effective topical products available, often beginning to kill fleas within 5 minutes of application. The extra insect growth regulator ingredient methoprene allows this product to also kill flea eggs and larvae as well. I have seen excellent results with this product for at least 30 days when it is applied as directed, although I usually recommend that clients not bathe their dogs 2 days before or for 2 days after application. I have seen occasional contact allergic reactions at the application site, consisting of a mild hair loss and/or dermatitis. The rare sensitive pet also may experience digestive upset as well. In my few years of using this product, I have seen only one animal to develop a neurological reaction after application. However the safety record of this product is overall excellent. Because it is so safe and effective in the vast majority of pets it is used, I give this product an overall rating of a 4, with an ease of application of a 4 as well. |
