Vet Review | While this product offers an economic alternative for killing/repelling fleas and ticks for 5 months, as well as preventing the development of flea eggs into larvae and adults, I have personally not found this product effective in my experience and opinion. The clients I have spoken to who have been pleased with this product have found it more effective as a flea preventative, rather than once an infestation already exists, where other products such as topical front line or advantage would be preferred. I have also seen that in some dogs local skin irritation and hives can occasionally occur in sensitive pets, which usually resolve once the collar is removed. I also have concern for cancer and neurological effects with exposure to any prolonged pesticides. While it is a nice benefit that the collar works even when wet, because of my concerns about overall efficacy and safety, I do not recommend use of this product. I give it an overall rating of a 2 with an efficacy a 2 and ease of use a 5. | This versatile topical product has the widest range of protection of both internal and external parasites. In both cats and dogs, all 3 stages of the flea life cycle are effectively controlled,in addition to ear mites. For dogs, there is also the wonderful treatment benefit of killing hidden scabies mites on the skin, which are so difficult for veterinarians to find on routine skin scrapings at our offices. In fact, when either I or veterinary dermatologists are presented with a very itchy dog, in addition to our allergy workups, we will often treat with this topical every few weeks to treat and rule out any hidden scabies mites contributing to the pet's itching. It is amazing how many dogs will respond to this treatment, leading me to believe that scabies mites are involved with a lot more itching problems in dogs than I first learned about in vet school. With the increased recognition and understanding of feline heartworm disease, this is often the first heartworm preventative that I will reach for in cats, especially given all of the other benefits above. While it is often effective for canine heartworm prevention as well, I have heard of rare lapses in protection, so I usually combine this topical in dogs with one of the oral heartworm prevention medications like Heartgard or Interceptor. The only disadvantage I have seen is the rare reaction on cats of mild digestive upset and temporary hair loss at the site of application. It also has the wonderful benefits of being water proof in only 2 hours after application, and in being approved for use in puppies as young as 6 weeks of age. | There is an outstanding new comprehensive internal and external parasite control product called sentinel spectrum, which combines 3 excellent worming medications that treat and prevent a wide variety of parasites from heartworms, intestinal worms ranging from tapeworms to whipworms, as well as controlling flea infestations. That is 6 types of parasites controlled with one pill. That is a wonderful benefit of this product, along with the tastiest beef flavored tablet. The only down side to this product in my experience and opinion is that it does not kill or repel fleas, but breaks the flea life cycle by preventing adult fleas from laying eggs, as well as killing the eggs. Adult fleas still may bite your dog, which may cause allergic dermatitis in some sensitive animals. I have also seen occasional pet vomit on this product, which is usually avoided by giving with a meal. A wonderful benefit over topical parasite control measures is that by combining all of the wonderful ingredients into a pill formulation prevents exposure of the humans in the household to chemical pesticide residues. I give this product an overall rating of a 4, with a taste of 4 and ease of use of a 5. |
