Vet Review | From one of the most reliable drug companies Merial, makers of Frontline Plus, is Tritak, which was introduced a few years ago, and offers a three prong protection against multiple parasites, including fleas, ticks, chewing lice and mites. This is probably one of the most rapidly effective topical products available, often beginning to kill fleas within 5 minutes of application. The extra insect growth regulator ingredient methoprene allows this product to also kill flea eggs and larvae as well. I have seen excellent results with this product for at least 30 days when it is applied as directed, although I usually recommend that clients not bathe their dogs 2 days before or for 2 days after application. I have seen occasional contact allergic reactions at the application site, consisting of a mild hair loss and/or dermatitis. The rare sensitive pet also may experience digestive upset as well. In my few years of using this product, I have seen only one animal to develop a neurological reaction after application. However the safety record of this product is overall excellent. Because it is so safe and effective in the vast majority of pets it is used, I give this product an overall rating of a 4, with an ease of application of a 4 as well. | This product is a wonderful economic alternative for clients who have used the Frontline product. It contains the same exact main ingredient as Frontline, Fipronil, which has been probably the number one used flea and tick preventative ingredient by veterinarians over decades now. Not only does it kill fleas and many species of ticks that carry Lyme and other diseases, but also can help in controlling scabies mange mites, as well, in those cases. It certainly is a much cheaper alternative to Frontline or Advantage products. Some excellent advantages include it being waterproof, as well as being safe to use in pets as young as 8 weeks of age. There may be a rare skin irritation side effect at the site of application, but other reactions are even more rare. I have occasionally seen digestive upset with this product. I would also not use it in dogs with a history of chronic seizure disorders. Because of its long-term reliability and safety, I give this product an overall rating of a 4.5, with an ease of application of 4.5. | This is one of my favorite and most effective products in preventing tick infestations on dogs of all sizes, as well as preventing the tick born diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehlrichia and Anaplasmosis. When some of the topical products have failed in some patients, I have found this collar quite valuable in significantly cutting down on tick burdens in these dogs. The effects are long lasting for up to 3 months preventing ticks from even attaching to dogs, and thus cutting down on tick exposure to humans as well. The only problems in terms of efficacy I have even seen with this product is when animal guardians apply the collar too loosely to their pets, which can cut down on its efficacy against ticks.. In order for this collar to work effectively, it must be fitted snugly against the pet's neck, where one is just able to get two fingers under the collar. If the collar is applied too loosely I have occasionally seen pets ingest this collar, leading to serious systemic reactions. The only other downside in using this collar is if the pet spends a significant time swimming during the warmer months. The collar's efficacy is cut down significantly if it is submerged in water or exposed to drenching rains. However when properly fitted to a dog's neck, this is one of the most effective products in preventing tick infestations on the market. |
