Vet Review | By combining imidacloprid and moxidectin, Advantage Multi offers the wonderful benefit of broad protection against BOTH common internal and external parasites in dogs and cats. An important area of coverage includes not only adult stages, but the immature stages of roundworms and hookworms, two parasites that are a risk to people if not prevented in our pets. It also treats and controls, and prevents whipworms, which are difficult to eradicate in both dogs and the environment. When applied monthly, it is almost 100 percent effective in preventing heartworm disease in dogs and cats. Additional benefits of treating scabies and demodectic mange and ear mites make this a very attractive product. All of this with the wonderful flea control benefits of the product advantage. The greatest benefit I see with this versatile product is that it takes the labor out of administering a myriad of medications to dogs to control these varied internal and external parasites. I also find that it kills the larval stages of fleas in the home surroundings of treated pets, which is a wonderful added benefit. I have on rare occasions seen topical irritation and sensitivity at the site of application, and even more scarce neurological reactions in hypersensitive pets. The only other downside would be the potential high cost of this product, as well as the need for clients to obtain a prescription from their veterinarian. Overall, however, I have found this product to be an excellent and safe all around internal and external parasite control manager in our dogs and cats. | One of my favorite and most widely prescribed flea and tick control products in practice front line top spot offers not only the ease of application in one spot, where it collects in the hair follicles and skin oils and gradually released over the month, but also a wide area of safety in most pets, including breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs. . It will kill adult fleas and larvae by selectively affecting the parasite's nervous system. Efficacy against flea eggs is variable in my experience and opinion. It will also kill chewing lice and some veterinarians, including myself have seen it work to help control demodectic mange and ear mites, although it is it not approved for use for these uses. This versatile product will also kill all stages of various ticks including brown dog ticks, american dog ticks, lone star ticks and deer ticks. I have also used it to control sarcoptic mange infestations in dogs, but will often go to topical revolution first in sarcoptic mange or ivermectin as my first choices for scabies. In general I find that fleas and ticks are generally killed before they have the chance to transmit diseases in patients, usually being close to 100% effective within 24 to 48 hours. The formulation is water proof so it is certainly appropriate to use in those outdoor dogs who love to swim. I have only seen occasional/rare side effects at the sight of application, and even more rare systemic reactions like digestive upset or neurological reactions or blood disorders in extremely sensitive pets. However these reactions are rare in my experience. In geriatric patients or sick patients or those with chronic disease it is important to consult with your veterinarian before applying this or any other topical flea and tick product. | This wonderful product whose flea and tick efficacy DIRECTLY ON CONTACT is based on topical permethrin which damages theses pests nervous systems, and when applied is effective, gentle on most dogs, long lasting (up to 6 weeks with most species of ticks)(5 weeks with fleas)(up to 4 weeks for dog lice and mites), and is very easy to apply, in addition to being economical and available without a prescription from your vet. It is safe enough to use on puppies over 4 weeks of age, but a consultation with your vet should be done before starting especially if your pet is old or has a chronic disease. . It also kills and repels mosquitoes as well. The major disadvantage with this product (unlike others like Frontline) is that it cannot be used on cats or near cats because of the permethrins in it. It is also marginally water soluble, and thus if your dog swims frequently it may need to be applied as often as every 2 weeks, which is off label use, but will last up to one month in those dogs not frequently bathed or who swim often. The rare side effects I have seen are usually mild, mainly being redness or hair loss of the skin where applied, and sometimes lethargy, vomiting or drooling if application spot is licked at. These however are not common in my experience. |
