Vet Review | An exciting new development in the fight against fleas and ticks is the long lasting chewable tablet called Bravecto, The active ingredient fluralaner, is a very effective ectoparasiticide, which acts on the nervous system of the parasite, without affecting the dog's nervous system. When given to dogs, this product starts killing fleas within 2 hours, and ticks a short time after that. Protection will last for approximately 12 weeks for fleas, and 8-12 weeks for ticks. In fact, clinical experience has shown it to be effective in treating and controlling 4 species of ticks, many of which are involved in transmitting disease to both dogs and people. It is even safe to use in pregnant and lactating animals, as well as most pets over the age of 6 months. I would use caution in using this or any other pesticide in sick, geriatric or pets with chronic immune mediated disease. Another minor drawback is that the fleas or tick must be ingesting a blood meal or feeding on your pet before becoming effective, thus there is still a remote possibility of transfer of certain tick born illnesses on rare occasion. Unlike most topical products that can potentially be washed or bathed off, the added benefit of giving a pill minimizes pesticide exposure for human family members, as well as being effective within a very short period of time. I give this product an overall rating of a 5 with an ease of use, and efficacy a 5 as well. | Because of the difficulties in client compliance in using multiple preventatives in cats for internal and external parasites, a new and comprehensive topical has been developed for kitties. Like the Bravecto Topical product for dogs, this topical for cats is labeled to work selectively on the nervous system of the fleas/ticks rather than mammalian species like the cat. However, on rare occasions even in cats with no prior history of neurological reactions, very rare neurological reactions have been observed in the field, which highlights the cat's unique sensitivity to any pesticide and drug. With the addition of moxidectin to this formulation, this particular product offers additional protection against both roundworm and hookworm intestinal parasites and heartworms, which is an important feature, particularly for outside kitties. While this product rapidly kills adult fleas and ticks who bite the cat, unlike the sister product, Bravecto for Dogs, this product does not repel these external parasites. Another important difference is that the Bravecto Plus product should not be used in pregnant or nursing kitties. The only other issue I have seen with this product is the occasional irritation at the site of application with even rarer digestive tract upset. With all that being said, the product offers excellent coverage against most major internal and external parasites in the cat. I give this product an overall rating of 4 with ease of application of a 5. | The makers of the flea and tick preventative oral tablet Bravecto have come up with a new formulation to use topically. With the same main ingredient, Fluralaner, which selectively affects the nervous systems of fleas and ticks, the topical formulation continues to provide reliable protection with the ease of once every 3-month application. Even after bathing or swimming the product remains effective BOTH as a repellent and rapid killer of most stages of the flea life cycle, as well as the additional benefits of killing and repelling ticks. The topical formulation gets around the occasional digestive upset seen with the oral formulation. Rare side effects include itching/irritation at the site of application and even rarer neurological reactions. However, overall the product is quite effective with an overall rating of 4.5 with ease of application of 5. |
