Vet Review | I have started to use this product over the past several months and have mixed feelings about it. A big advantage is the ease of administering the beef and pork flavored tablet but it should be administered on full stomach. And while it avoids the oily liquid pesticides on the back that many clients don ' t like, if a pet is allergic to beef or pork this is a big disadvantage. The best thing about this product (which is similar to Capstar) is the quick kill of adult fleas working within 30 minutes and being almost 100 percent effective against fleas within 4 hours of giving it, and lasting for a month!!! (much longer than a Capstar pill.) A big problem is not only the expense but it also has no tick coverage. In my experience and opinion, I have also seen several dogs vomit when given this pill and it is really not supposed to be used in patients with seizure disorders, which is also a concern of mine in terms of safety. Along the same line, it is not supposed to be used in pregnant or nursing females, as from what I understand when the product was tested there were supposed loss of litter during pregnancy, poor weight gain of puppies and vomiting, the latter symptom which I have seen in clinical practice. In general I am always a little worried about products not approved for young puppies, as the puppies have to be at least 14 weeks of old, according to the label use of this product. It is not a cheap product, and for the above reasons I don't use it often even though it is tremendously effective against fleas. For the reasons stated above, I therefore give this product an overall rating of 2 with effectiveness (for fleas) of 4, the ease of use a 5, and the taste a 4. I still prefer Front line, Advantage and K9 Advantix despite the oily spot because of the increased coverage of parasites, and my concerns about safety | This reliable and more economical alternative to Frontline comes from a very reliable company, Elanco. Its main ingredient, fipronil, probably has the most clinical record of experience of efficacy over many years, in killing both adult fleas before they lay eggs, as well as various species of ticks. Its safety is touted by supposedly targeting only the nervous system of the pests. With cats, we always must be careful when evaluating the newer generation of emerging pesticides for fleas and ticks that are coming out, as kitties' detoxification pathways are typically more sensitive than dogs'. Most kitties tolerate this single spot application quite well. In addition to being waterproof, so important for outdoor kitties, this product is easier to apply than most competitors, as well as leaving no pungent or chemical smell like many over the counter competitor products. Most of my clients have found it as effective as Frontline, but not as quick as Advantage. Some clients have complained that it does not seem to repel the ticks, who can occasionally be found attached to the skin before they die. Not only it is important in using products like Easy Spot to prevent flea bite anemia in cats, and unsightly tapeworms, but in recent years, fleas have been shown to carry an increasing number of serious diseases and infections, including Bartonella species, amongst others. Another benefit of this product is that it is labeled as safe to use in pregnant or nursing cats. Side effects, although rare, may include topical irritation at the site of application, lethargy, as well as rare twitching reactions, agitation, and/or restlessness. These are typically short-lived, and fortunately, are very uncommon across pet populations that the product has been used. Some veterinarians and experts have wondered about the recent resistance of fleas to some of the fipronil-based products, but that has not been my experience. I give this product an overall rating of a 4, with an ease of application and efficacy of 4, as well. | 1800petmeds is very excited to now offer an economic and reliable alternative to the brand name Front line plus in the war against flea and tick infestations on dogs and cats. By storing itself in the oil glands of the skin, the ingredients self distribute through the hair follicles and provide protection against fleas, ticks and lice for up to a month. While most of the competitors' products kill only the adult fleas on pets, the two main ingredients in this product, fiprinil and methoprene, not only kill the adult fleas and ticks, but also eggs and larvae, which may represent up to 95% of the total flea population. Recent studies in dogs have shown that these ingredients together start killing fleas within 4 hours, and within 12 to 24 hours 100% of the fleas are killed. While many competitors' products require the fleas to bite the pet, Flea 5x kills on contact. Another wonderful advantage of using Flea 5x is that the product is water proof, and will not be washed away with bathing or swimming, as long as animal guardians wait until the product is completely absorbed into the oil glands, which usually takes 48 hours, before bathing the pet or allowing pet to swim. Veterinarians and guardians should also know that this product is safe to use in breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs and cats. However kittens and puppies should be at least 8 weeks of age before applying this product. Because fleas and ticks pose many health threats to both dogs and cats, including dangerous anemia, rickettsial diseases, flea allergy dermatitis, and tapeworms, it is important to have all pets on a comprehensive flea and tick control program such as Flea 5x. And with the reliable 1800petmeds brand name, animal guardians can confidently rely on the performance of this product as comparable to the brand name. I see very few disadvantages in using this product. Rarely there may be a mild contact dermatitis at the site of application, where occasional pets experience crusting and hair loss. Even less common are idiosyncratic digestive or neurologic upset in very sensitive patients. Any pet with a chronic health condition or prior sensitivity to chemicals or vaccination should have a thorough veterinary exam and evaluation before applying any topical or oral pesticide product. I also recommend that the application of products such as Flea 5x be done on a different day(preferably at least 7 days apart) from other parasite control products such as heartworm prevention or immune challenges such as vaccination. Occasionally clients may see more fleas on their pets after immediately applying Flea 5x plus, but this is just the dying off of the flea population, as they rise to the top of the coat. Because of the often presence of eggs in the environment before the application of this product, it may take a few months to kill the total population of fleas in the home, which is why I often suggest treating the home as well when starting pets on a product like flea 5x plus. While flea 5x does not repel fleas and ticks, I have not found any current products on the market effective with that in my experience and opinion. I give this product an overall rating of 4.5(on scale of 1-5) with the efficacy and ease of use of a 5. |
