About this product

What is Clomicalm (clomipramine hydrochloride)?

Clomicalm (clomipramine) is used to treat separation anxiety in dogs in connection with behavior modification and training. This medication affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced leading to behavioral problems in dogs. Clomicalm requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For:

Dogs (6+ months of age)

Benefits:

  • Treats separation anxiety in dogs
  • Helps reduce symptoms caused by separation anxiety such as, excessive barking, inappropriate elimination, and other destructive tendencies
  • It is not a tranquilizer or a sedative, and should not affect your dog's personality or memory

How does Clomicalm work?

Clomicalm (clomipramine) is a tricyclic antidepressant that affects chemicals in the brain (serotonin) that may become unbalanced leading to behavioral problems in dogs. Clomicalm treats separation anxiety in dogs. Separation anxiety is, in many cases, the root cause of behaviors such as excessive barking, inappropriate elimination, and other destructive tendencies. When used in conjunction with a training program, Clomicalm may be used to help decrease or eliminate these behaviors by helping treat the root cause.

Cautions:

Don't use Clomicalm if your pet is taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as Anipryl, or selegiline, or has been using a Preventic Collar in the last 14 days. Do not use in dogs with a known hypersensitivity to clomipramine or other tricyclic antidepressants, or in breeding male dogs. Clomicalm may increase the effects of other drugs and may cause drowsiness. Stop giving your pet Clomicalm and contact your vet if your pet displays any of the following reactions: difficulty breathing, hives, irregular heartbeat, difficulty urinating, seizures, fever with increased panting, muscle stiffness or weakness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face. Not for use in humans. In case of accidental ingestion, which can have serious consequences, seek medical help immediately. There is no specific antidote for clomipramine. People with known hypersensitivity to clomipramine should administer the product with caution.

Brand Name:

Anafranil (Novartis), Clomicalm (Virbac)

Generic Name:

Clomipramine (klo-mip'-ra-meen)

What is the most important thing I should know about Clomicalm?

Clomicalm is a prescription medication FDA approved for veterinary use in dogs. Clomicalm is available as 20 mg, 40 mg and 80 mg tablets. The usual dose of Clomicalm in dogs is 0.5-1.5 mg/lb every 24 hours. Clomicalm may also be useful in cats, but cats tend to be more sensitive to tricyclic antidepressant drugs. Dosing of cats may be difficult with the commercially available products. Clomicalm may not help symptoms right away. It may take a number of days before symptoms begin to lessen. It is not recommended for behavior problems such as aggression. Other causes of inappropriate behavior unrelated to separation anxiety should be ruled out before prescribing. Contact your veterinarian if symptoms get worse or if new symptoms develop while your pet is on this medication. Clomicalm may cause drowsiness or dizziness.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Clomicalm to my pet?

Tell your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or lactating.

How should Clomicalm be given?

If you do not understand the directions, ask your pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Store Clomicalm at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep this medication away from children and pets.

What are the potential side effects of Clomicalm?

If any of the following serious side effects occur, stop giving Clomicalm and seek emergency veterinary medical attention: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue or face, or hives), seizures, a fast or irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, difficulty urinating, fever with increased panting, muscle stiffness or muscle weakness. Other less serious side effects may occur. Continue giving Clomicalm and talk to your veterinarian if your pet has drowsiness or dizziness, dry mouth and eyes, constipation, panting, mild agitation, weakness or headache, nausea or loss of weight or appetite. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet.

Really Helps!!
As our dog has aged, he is 10 years old, he has developed anxiety with loud noises, but especially when it thunders! The Clomicalm has really helped him with this anxiety & has calmed his stomach as well. He eats better & doesn't get as nervous when we have to leave him alone. Our sitter for trips has noticed a huge difference in his appetite!

Breed Schnauzer
Works amazingly well
Our 7 year old Schnauzer has some pretty severe behavior issues. He does not like children at all. He used to be on Zanax which did not work at all! We were going to have a house full, including children, for Christmas, so I knew I had to try something else. Over the years his temperament has gotten really bad. I was dreading Christmas. My husband said to take him back to the vet and see if there’s something they could give him that would work. Clomicalm usually takes a few months to work, so I was expecting much. However, it worked from DAY 1. It’s not 100%, but it has worked. My Conan is no longer shaking and trying to bite. In fact, he allows my 6 year old granddaughter to sit beside him and pet him. This has never happened before Clomicalm. I’m hoping after he has been on this medication for a few more months, he will begin to play and act normal. I do view the medication as a success because before he started taking it, he could not be around children. Thank you, Clomicalm!!!!!!!!!

First of all let me state my vet prescribed half a pill a day for my neutered male senior eight year old cat. He's been on the medication almost six months now.  He began showing anxiety and spraying all over the house whenever he saw a cat in the back yard. I have used Feliway plug ins, and other calming aids but nothing was working.  I clean the litter box two to four times a day.  I even use fox urine in the yard to deter cats, raccoons and other animals from coming into my yard. He wasn't sleeping, and kept meowing and yowling. The vet said to allow thirty days for the drug to get into his system, but it worked from the very first dose.  No spraying, no meowing, no pacing or running from window to window, not going into the litter box every fifteen minutes to urinate a small bit or dig around. No excessive grooming.  I send a written report to my vet every month with updates. He sleeps the normal fourteen or so hours a day, birds in the yard don't agitate him as much.  The only negative side effect I've encountered is he seems to have some elimination issues. Every other month I've found a couple pieces of feces in the house. Once near the litter box, in the living room, and in the kitchen where he sits to eat. I think he might be dribbling a little urine as he licks himself a bit more. He's not meowing or stressed and otherwise goes into the litter box normally. It's a lot easier to clean up a couple pieces of feces than cat urine spray.

Great for separation anxiety, OCD
Our rescue couldn’t be left alone when we got him. He was a rather extreme case. We really have noticed a difference in his behavior on this medication. We also tried Prozac and diane and both of these lowered his impulsivity threshold, the threshold by which he became or acted aggressively. The Tennessee had been there but it was incredibly clear when he was on those two medications. That was not the case with this medication and it didn’t really seem to take the edge off of his anxiety, without being sedated. His demeanor changed it was like night and day. Also we have been getting this medication from a different supplier who promised regular auto shipments but for whatever reason they were always complications but we have not had a single problem with this company which is important because our dog does get so aggressive when he’s on the medication he really does require it. So a couple days without is a really big deal so thank you to the people who still make it and thank you to you You guys for selling it.

Good for anxiety
My dog has been diagnosed with general anxiety. He is a rescue and is very fearful of loud noises and strangers (especially men). Walking him was always a struggle because he would tug so hard I couldn't hold on to him. After taking clomicalm for several months, he is a lot less fearful and is super calm on walks which we can now take 2-3 times a day!
