What is Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment?

B.N.P. Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment is a sterile ointment that is used to topically treat eye infections. B.N.P. Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For:

Dogs and Cats

Benefits:

  • Successfully treats bacterial infections of the eye
  • Works on a wide variety of bacteria

How it Works:

B.N.P. Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment contains bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin B. This combination of antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections caused by various bacteria. We also carry B.N.P with Hydrocortisone Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment, which contains the added hydrocortisone ingredient.

Cautions:

Before using B.N.P. Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment, tell your veterinarian if your pet is being given other eye ointments or eye medications. Sensitivity is rare, however if a reaction occurs, discontinue use. As with any antibiotic preparation, prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi. Appropriate measures should be taken if this occurs. If infection does not respond to treatment in two or three days, the diagnosis and therapy should be re-evaluated. If your pet has swelling of the face or itching, or appears to have difficulty breathing, contact your veterinarian immediately. Care should be taken not to contaminate the applicator tip of the tube during application. Do not allow the applicator tip to come in contact with any tissue. Do not use this product as a pre-surgical ocular lubricant. Adverse reactions of ocular irritation and corneal ulceration have been reported in association with such use. Serious hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions have been reported in cats within 4 hours of application of antibiotic ophthalmic preparations. Some of these reactions have resulted in death.

Brand Name:

Vetropolycin HC (Dechra), Cortisporin (King), Neobacimyx-H (Schering Plough)

What is the most important information I should know about B.N.P. Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment:

B.N.P. Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic is FDA-approved for veterinary use in dogs and cats. It is a prescription medication available as a sterile eye ointment. The sterile ointment is usually applied as a thin film to the eye 3 or 4 times a day. It is used in the treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the eyelid and conjunctiva in dogs and cats when due to organisms susceptible to the antibiotics contained in the ointment. Laboratory tests should be conducted including in vitro culturing and susceptibility tests on samples collected prior to treatment. Contact your veterinarian if your pet's symptoms begin to get worse or if you do not see any improvement to your pet's condition after a few days. Do not touch the tube opening to any surface, including eyes and hands. The tube opening is sterile. If it becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in the eye.

What is B.N.P. Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment:

Bacitracin, Neomycin and Polymyxin B are antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections. Each gram contains Bacitracin Zinc 400 units, Neomycin Sulfate 5 mg (equivalent to 3.5 mg of Neomycin base), Polymyxin B Sulfate 10,000 units in a base of white petrolatum and Mineral Oil. The three antibiotics (bacitracin-neomycin-polymyxin) provide a broad spectrum of activity against the gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria commonly involved in superficial infections of the eyelid and conjunctiva. Bacitracin is effective against gram-positive bacteria including hemolytic and nonhemolytic streptococci and staphylococci. Resistant strains rarely develop. Neomycin is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including staphylococci, Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenzae and many strains of Proteus and Pseudomonas. Polymyxin B is bactericidal to gram-negative bacteria especially Pseudomonas. No resistant strains have been found to develop in vivo.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before using B.N.P. Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment on my pet:

Do not use B.N.P. Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment if your pet has a viral or fungal infection of the eye. It is used for bacterial infections only. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or lactating.

Foreign bodies, crusted exudates and debris should be carefully removed. Store B.N.P. Triple Antibiotic Ophthalmic Ointment at 59° - 77 °F., away from moisture and heat.
