AlphaTRAK® 3 Directions:

  • OBTAINING BLOOD SAMPLES: Select a Test Site and obtain a capillary blood sample
  • Prepare the lancing device and puncture the test site. When the blood droplet and strip icons appear on the display, use the lancing device to obtain a drop of blood.
  • Perform a glucose test
  • BLOOD GLUCOSE TESTING: Remove a test strip from the vial. Check test strip expiration date (printed on the vial). Do not use expired test strips or the results may be inaccurate.
  • Insert test strip into the meter to turn it on. Set Lot Code (using the Code Strip). Press “c” to set the correct code (match the code on the strip vial) Press “m” to save. Set Species: Change species on meter after inserting test strip.
  • Apply and hold blood to the front edge of the sample area of the test strip (dark-colored rectangle on the test strip) until you hear a beep, and a vertical line appears on the screen. The meter will start to count down (3, 2, 1) which indicates the test strip has enough blood and the meter is checking the glucose level. View Results.
  • SEE INCLUDED GUIDE FOR FULL DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS
Tip:

A thin layer of petroleum jelly may be applied to the test site prior to lancing. This can help the blood form a droplet without getting into the hair.

Don’t buy if you value your pet’s life
The good: this uses less blood than the precision Xtra I’ve been using (primarily for ketones). It also gives a faster result. The bad: they need a better tech writer. Neither the quick set up instructions NOR the 20-something page booklet you can download describes or has a picture of the “reminders” step. I think this is why SO MANY can’t set up their meter because it looks like the meter has skipped the set units and set date and gone straight to set time. Don’t fall for it. Why they didn’t make reminders an add on done at the end of wanted is beyond me—I doubt many use it and I’m sure it causes A LOT of problems during set up. I also don’t like all the strips in a vial. I wouldn’t be surprised if rubbing the contact ends together all the time is what’s causing so many errors people get. Precision Xtra, way cheaper for glucose strips, packages each in its own foil pack. And why the heck are these so expensive? If it’s bc it can do several species then for God’s sake make separate strips for each bc the cost is ridiculous esp if so many strips fail. Also there’s nothing in ANY instructions about removing the battery protective strip. There’s also nothing about how to actually remove the battery to replace… pet parents don’t want to be messing around with very pricey equipment that’s vital to their pet living so spend a penny on the ink and describe/show how to get the old batteries out. Especially since it’s unlikely to last more than one day with what’s shipped. The UGLY: first tech support is available only in a small window. Not very customer friendly when we have problems during the 75% of the time there’s no support. Next, I got a new meter. Set it up 2 nights ago, took a reading yesterday am (went fine) and today—once I’d cleaned everything up I tried to turn it on to copy down the results (because it had balked at connecting to the app) and NO POWER. Replace batteries. Still no power. Many many many hours googling to troubleshoot until zoetis opened and on the phone with Zoetis no avail. So now it will be ANOTHER WEEK waiting for a new meter to arrive. So if this meter is vital to your pet’s life you must buy at least four because they fail after 48 hours and it takes many days to replace. Shame on everyone involved.

Clearly Zoetis didn't test this product!
Honestly, I can't believe this product is being sold as is. I had been using AlphaTrak 2 for the last 5 years on my diabetic cat. Not always easy to use but it was much more simple than the #3. First of all, the lancing device does NOT WORK. At all! Luckily, I have my old lancing device from my old kit. Second, the testing device does NOT PAIR with my iPhone. And a paper tracker-notebook was not included. OK, so I have to manually write down my cat's glucose reading. Third - the instructions are extremely convoluted. AlphaTrak 2 had a few simple steps in their instructions. All of this said, I was able to get a reading. But for first timers, this is the WORST product to test your pet. Seriously, Zoetis - DO BETTER! Diabetic pet parents need a good, reliable, easy-to-use testing kit and this isn't it.

Not user friendly
We have been trying to use this device for over a month now. The directions are hard to follow. It requires way too much blood , and the device to puncture with does not work enough to draw the blood. I would not recommend. Waste of money.

Im shocked by the bad reviews only a few issues …
I have had the Alpha 2 for years and loved it and like everyone else, I recently went to order new strips and saw they cost almost $90 and about fell out my chair and looked into why and read they were phasing it out for the new Alpha 3. I read the reviews and was honestly scared to buy it, but figured the Alpha 2 was easy for me to figure out, so I’ll take on a challenge.. The Alpha 3 was easy to set up for me, I’m not sure if everyone received the little book that tells you step by step what to do on how to set it up, but I did and it was similar to Alpha 2.. I used test control liquid and it was within range. I took my dogs BG and compared it to the last few strips I had of my Alpha 2 and they were very similar maybe a point off… now here is where I could see complaints .. even with the A2 I hated the lancet device, it never produced enough blood, so with my A2 I took off the cap of the lancet device and inserted the lancet, cocked it, and used it just like that to prick my dogs ear vein, which always allowed me to get enough blood but not too much.. I am doing the same with the A3, HOWEVER the new lancet device doesn’t allow it to be used without the cover on, so I am using my old A2 lancet device and the new A3 lancets in it. Issue number 2…unlike the A2 you have to get an adequate amount of blood the first time into the test strip or it will error out,, I remember with the A2 you could keep scooping up blood over and over and it would work before it would ever error out… but not this machine, so make sure you have enough blood before pushing in your test strip into machine… I can’t comment on all the Bluetooth stuff because I am a pen and paper gal and I write down all my dogs numbers and do the curve graphs myself in excel, so I don’t care about that aspect. All in all I would recommend this machine and if you have issues, please ask your vet to set it up for you and show you how to use the lancet to get enough blood, that may alleviate a lot of the issues people are having.

Really disappointed
Bought a vial of test strips, tried 5 of them with the control solution. None of them were in the range on the vial. Code was correct for dogs. I can't trust these with my dog. So, basically $55 down the drain. Might as well just reorder an entire starter kit for the same price and pray the strips work in it.

PIECE OF CRAP
Where do I start? The meter is almost impossible to set up. The instructions are incredibly hard to understand and the print is extremely small. Also, complete instructions are not provided with the starter kit. You have to go online. Big help if you are in the middle of collecting a blood sample. I don't know if there are any competing products, but I would avoid Alphatrak 3 like the plague.
